Tucked inside Parco Sempione — Milan’s beloved green lung between Castello Sforzesco and the Arco della Pace — stands a structure unlike anything else in the city. The Teatro Continuo, designed by the great Italian artist Alberto Burri in 1973 for the 15th Triennale di Milano, is a monumental outdoor stage: raw, open, and built with a single radical idea in mind — that theatre belongs to everyone.
For most of the year it stands quietly among the trees, admired by walkers and cycling families who might not know quite what to make of it. But on June 14, 2026, it roars back to life for Burri Palcoscenico Aperto, a daylong performance marathon that gives the space back to the city’s emerging creative talent.
“The project was born from a deep desire to return theatre to its origins — as a space for pleasure and reflection in the heart of the city.”

Nine schools and cultural organisations from across Milan take turns activating the stage across the afternoon and evening, presenting the results of their artistic training programmes. The line-up stretches from theatre academies and fine arts schools to architecture students, bringing a genuinely democratic range of voices to one of the most architecturally significant stages in Italy.

You don’t need to arrive at 2 pm and stay all evening — though you could. The beauty of a performance marathon is that you can drift in and out, find a spot on the grass between shows, wander to the nearby lake, and return for whoever’s on next. It’s the kind of afternoon that Milano does quietly brilliantly: culture, spontaneity, and good weather (fingers crossed) all in the same square kilometre.

Seating is provided for the performances, but feel free to bring a blanket or picnic mat to stretch out on the lawn. The APEgaia food truck will be on site all day serving sweet and savoury crêpes.
