One of Milan’s best-known addresses is about to disappear for two years. The Hotel Principe di Savoia, on Piazza della Repubblica, closes on 1 January 2027 for a full restoration and is not expected to reopen until 2029. If staying there was ever on your list, the final months of 2026 are your window.

Why the Principe di Savoia is closing
Dorchester Collection, the group that runs the hotel, announced the restoration on 8 July 2026, describing it as one of the most significant investments in the property’s history.
Operations are suspended from 1 January 2027, with reopening expected in 2029. Christopher Cowdray, President of Dorchester Collection, framed the announcement as a vote of confidence in Milan and its future.
The timing is not accidental. The hotel opened in 1927 and reaches its centenary exactly as the works begin.

How long you can still book
In practice, until 31 December 2026. After that, the next opportunity is the reopening.
Booking systems already reflect this. When we checked on 27 August 2026, Booking.com listed eight room types for dates in November 2026, but returned “we have no availability on our site for this property” for March 2027.
The usual caveat applies: rates and availability change constantly, so check your own dates before making plans.
What changes after the restoration
According to the announcement, the hotel reopens with significantly larger rooms and suites, which usually means fewer keys overall, alongside a limited collection of private residences, a format a number of European luxury hotels have been adopting.
The project also includes a new wellness destination, a reworked dining offer and a rooftop venue overlooking Milan’s skyline, something the hotel does not have today.
That is precisely why visiting now matters: the Principe that reopens in 2029 will not be the hotel that is open today.
What the hotel is like today
The hotel sits at Piazza della Repubblica 17, about 100 metres from Repubblica train and metro station, and less than a kilometre from Piazza Gae Aulenti and the Porta Nuova district.
Rooms follow a classic style, with dark wood furniture, bathrobes, slippers and satellite TV. The spa occupies the top floor and includes a sauna, a Turkish bath and a frescoed swimming pool.
The restaurant serves Milanese dishes and Italian classics, the lounge bar pours cocktails late into the night, and the hotel runs a complimentary limousine service to the city centre.

Is it worth booking now?
If what you want is the Principe as it is now, with the staff you have come to know, this is the moment. When the hotel reopens in 2029 it will very likely have not only a new look but a renewed team.
That means many of the long-serving staff, the ones who remember guests by name, may no longer be there. Which makes this a fair excuse to say goodbye to an era that is ending.
