Itabus Launches a Second Bus Route to Munich, via Austria

If you have ever taken, or considered taking, the Itabus coach connection between Milan and Munich, here is an update: the company is doubling down on its bet on the German market with a second international route to the Bavarian capital.

This new line does not start in Milan. It links Naples and Rome to Munich instead, running through Florence, Bologna, Verona and the Trentino-Alto Adige before crossing into Austria. Read on for the stops, the first published schedule, and what it changes for travellers based in Milan.

Milan’s bus link to Munich just got some company

Itabus rolled out its first Munich connection just a few weeks ago, linking Turin and Milan to the Bavarian capital via Switzerland, with stops in Lugano and Chur. According to the company, that route has seen strong early demand — enough to justify a second, separate line to Germany, announced in Rome on 22 September 2026.

So Milan keeps its own bus link to Munich exactly as it was. What is new is a second, independent route further south, aimed at travellers who are not starting their trip anywhere near Lombardy.

The new route: Naples and Rome to Munich, via the Alps

The new line runs 2 daily connections, linking Naples and Rome to Munich by way of Caserta, Florence, Bologna, Mantua, Verona, Trento, Bolzano, Bressanone, Vipiteno and Innsbruck.

That is a genuinely scenic itinerary: the coach climbs out of central Italy, through Trentino-Alto Adige, and crosses the Alps into Austria before reaching Bavaria — largely the same corridor used by the future high-speed Frecciarossa Milan-Munich train, which is still in testing and not expected before summer 2027.

First timetable: overnight buses in both directions

The first published timetable is built around overnight departures, so passengers can use the full day before boarding.

In practice: buses leaving Naples or Rome in the evening reach Trento and Bolzano the following morning — useful on its own if that is your final stop — before continuing on to end the route in Munich around midday. In the other direction, the bus leaving Munich in the late afternoon reaches Trento and Bolzano the same evening, with the route ending in Naples.

Austria joins the Itabus network, with a stop in Innsbruck

One detail stands out in this expansion: it marks Itabus’s first move into Austria, with a stop in Innsbruck. The line also brings the company, for the first time, to Trento, Bolzano, Bressanone and Vipiteno, in Trentino-Alto Adige.

“Just a few weeks after launching our first services, we are seeing strong demand from travellers. The success of the connections between Milan, Turin and Munich confirms the interest in an offer that makes Europe’s main destinations more accessible. With this new international route, Itabus is expanding its offer even further, connecting Munich and Innsbruck to all the main cities of our Italian network, from north to south,” said Francesco Fiore, CEO of Itabus, in the statement.
