For travelers and digital nomads moving between Milan, Rome, and Florence, the struggle of unstable train Wi-Fi is about to end. Italo, Italy’s premier private high-speed rail operator, announced today that it will equip its entire fleet with Starlink satellite internet.
This move makes Italo the first major railway company in the world to integrate SpaceX’s Starlink technology across all its trains, promising a massive upgrade to onboard connectivity.

High-Speed Internet for High-Speed Trains
Historically, maintaining a stable internet connection on trains moving at 186 mph (300 km/h)—especially through Italy’s numerous tunnels and mountainous terrain—has been a technical nightmare. Starlink solves this by using a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites to beam high-speed broadband directly to the moving trains.
According to the official announcement, testing over the last year has delivered impressive results:
- Speed: Up to 400 Mbps, capable of handling heavy tasks like 4K streaming and large file downloads.
- Latency: A remarkably low 25 ms, making real-time video calls and online gaming smooth and lag-free.
Passenger trials were overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of users reporting full satisfaction and 80% rating the browsing experience as superior to previous Wi-Fi systems.

When Can You Use It?
The rollout is scheduled to begin in mid-2026, with the entire fleet expected to be upgraded by 2027.
“This agreement with Starlink is an important and strategic step,” said Gianbattista La Rocca, CEO of Italo. “We know how connected the world is today, which is why we decided to invest in offering travelers this possibility.”

What This Means for Milan Travelers
For those using Milan as a base, this upgrade transforms the train into a fully viable mobile office. Whether you are commuting to Rome (a 3-hour trip) or heading to Venice, you will soon be able to join Zoom meetings, stream Netflix without buffering, or work on the cloud without the frustration of dropping signals.
This initiative is part of a broader project to expand onboard multimedia services. Throughout 2026, Italo plans to introduce new entertainment options that leverage this powerful new connection, ensuring that travel time is as productive—or relaxing—as possible.
