Milan is not only fashion, design, and aperitivo. Every spring, the city turns into a huge open-air track thanks to Stramilano, one of Italy’s most popular running events. The 2026 edition takes place on Sunday, May 3, and promises to attract thousands of runners, walkers, and families ready to enjoy the streets of Milan in a very special way.

What makes Stramilano unique

Unlike many other city runs, Stramilano is designed for everyone. You don’t have to be a professional athlete to take part. The event brings together elite runners competing in the Half Marathon (21 km) and casual participants joining the 10 km or the 5 km routes. The spirit is simple: celebrate sport and experience Milan from a different perspective.

The atmosphere is festive, with live cheering, colorful T-shirts, and a city buzzing with energy. For tourists, it’s also a perfect excuse to discover landmarks like the Duomo, Castello Sforzesco, and the Arco della Pace while being part of Milanese life.

Tips for international participants

  • Plan your stay: hotels near the city center (Duomo, Brera, or Porta Garibaldi) will put you close to the starting points. Book early, as availability shrinks closer to the event.
  • Transport: both Piazza Duomo and Piazza Castello are easily reachable by metro (lines M1 and M2). Public transport runs extra services during big events.
  • Weather: early May in Milan usually means mild spring temperatures — perfect for running, but bring layers in case of rain.
  • Make it a weekend: combine Stramilano with sightseeing. After your run, enjoy an aperitivo in Navigli or explore museums like Pinacoteca di Brera.

Why you should join

The Stramilano isn’t only about running: it’s a cultural event that blends sport, community, and tourism. You don’t need to be a marathoner — even walking the 5 km route lets you be part of a Milanese tradition dating back more than 50 years.

It’s a chance to collect memories, meet locals, and bring home a medal that symbolizes not just a race, but an experience of Milan itself.
