Trenord weekend trains are getting a seasonal boost starting on March 28, 2026, making it easier to travel from Milan to Malpensa Airport, Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, and even the Ligurian coast. For visitors using Milan as a base, this is practical news: more train options usually mean smoother airport transfers and simpler day trips during spring and summer.

The seasonal expansion begins with the start of the warmer months and is aimed at meeting the growing demand for leisure travel on weekends and holidays. Extra services will be added on key routes from Milan, with updated schedules available through Trenord’s website and app.

More weekend trains between Milan Cadorna and Malpensa

From March 28 through September 28, 2026, Trenord will extend weekend service hours on the Milano Cadorna-Malpensa Airport T1 and T2 line, which connects the airport with central Milan.

On Saturdays and Sundays, evening service will be extended with six additional trains. Departing from Milano Cadorna, new trains will leave at 11:56 PM, 12:26 AM, and 12:56 AM for Malpensa Airport T1 and T2.

From Malpensa Airport T2, extra departures will be added at 12:50 AM, 1:20 AM, and 1:50 AM, stopping at Malpensa Airport T1 before continuing to Milano Cadorna.

Sunday and Monday service will also begin earlier thanks to four added trains. From Milano Cadorna, extra departures to Malpensa will run at 3:26 AM and 3:56 AM. From Malpensa Airport T2, added services will leave at 4:20 AM and 4:50 AM, again stopping at Malpensa Airport T1 before reaching the city.

This is especially useful for travelers with very early departures or late-night arrivals, which are often the most stressful airport transfers to plan.

Extra trains to Lake Como and Lake Maggiore

From March 29 through September 27, 2026, holiday services to the lakes will also be strengthened.

On the Milano Cadorna-Saronno-Como Lago line, two extra trains will be added. The first is train 4129, departing Milano Cadorna at 10:00 AM and arriving at Como Lago at 10:48 AM. The return extra service is train 4174, leaving Como Lago at 6:56 PM and arriving at Milano Cadorna at 7:45 PM.

Toward Lake Maggiore, on the Milano Cadorna-Saronno-Varese Nord-Laveno Mombello Lago line, two more services will also be introduced. Train 4027 will depart Milano Cadorna at 9:22 AM and arrive at Laveno Mombello Lago at 10:35 AM. The return train 4074 will leave Laveno Mombello Lago at 6:28 PM and arrive at Milano Cadorna at 7:41 PM.

For anyone planning an easy day trip from Milan, these additions make two of northern Italy’s most popular lake destinations a little more accessible during the busiest leisure travel months.

The “Sea Trains” return between Lombardy and Liguria

Another seasonal service is also coming back: the “Sea Trains”, which reconnect Lombardy and Liguria starting on March 28, 2026.

These trains will run every Saturday and on holidays, with five pairs of trains per day, operated jointly by Trenitalia and Trenord.

The service is designed to take passengers directly from Lombardy to the beaches of both the Riviera di Levante and the Riviera di Ponente. In addition to Milan, the trains will also serve cities including Bergamo, Monza, Seregno, Como, Saronno, Legnano, Busto Arsizio, Gallarate, Rho, Pavia, and Voghera.

For travelers spending time in Milan, this opens up another appealing possibility: using the city not just as a base for urban sightseeing and day trips to the lakes, but also for a train ride to the sea.

Where to buy tickets

Tickets for the Sea Trains can be purchased at all Trenord ticket offices, including those in Milano Porta Garibaldi, Milano Lambrate, Milano Bovisa, Saronno, Bergamo, Como San Giovanni, Seregno, Monza, Gallarate, Busto Arsizio, Legnano, Rho, Pavia, and Voghera, all stations served by the route.

According to the information released, seat reservations are not available for this service.

Details about stops and schedules for both the Sea Trains and the additional weekend services are available on trenord.it and in the Trenord app.

Why this matters for visitors staying in Milan

For international travelers, these changes are more useful than they may seem at first glance. Milan often works as a hub: people arrive through Malpensa, spend a few days in the city, then add short escapes to places like Lake Como, Lake Maggiore, or the Liguria coast.

With more trains running on weekends and holidays, planning becomes easier. Late arrivals at the airport feel less complicated, early departures become more manageable, and popular warm-weather destinations become better suited for a spontaneous day trip.

For spring and summer 2026, Milan will once again be even more connected to some of the most popular leisure destinations in northern Italy.
